Skill: ***/*

The intermediate level hut-to-hut ski tours are aimed at aspiring ski tourers who have completed some day tours and have basic ski touring experience – e.g. familiarity with using skins and skinning technique, conversions/kick-turns. You need to be able to walk uphill on some steep and exposed slopes with boot crampons while carrying your skis on your rucksack.

You need to be a competent off-piste skier capable of skiing 15 - 20 continuous turns off-piste on most slopes and with the confidence to tackle steeper pitches in tricky conditions.

These tours differ from the beginner level tours in that ascents & descents will be more demanding – i.e. longer & steeper.

Stamina: ****

Stamina-wise, you need to be able to ski all day for several consecutive days at a steady pace. On these trips the average skinning will be 3 - 4 hours per day although this is a guideline only. Ski touring is hard work and we do find most newcomers are surprised by just how physically demanding it can be! These tours differ from the beginner level tours in that ascents & descents will be more demanding – i.e. longer & steeper. You need to be able to carry a rucksack with all need for a week staying in mountain huts.

To get maximum enjoyment from these trips you need to be working on your fitness well in advance of the tour which means plenty of aerobic exercise like running/cycling/swimming.

Bernese Oberland (Intermediate)

The Bernese Oberland in Switzerland offers some fantastic ski touring amid truly breathtaking scenery. One of our most popular ski tours and rightly so!

Our starting point is Interlaken, the capital of the Jungfrau region. Our itinerary takes in some of the best ascents and descents in the region as we traverse across the massif.

If you have never skied in the Bernese Oberland, it is a region you must visit!

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Interlaken and book into your hotel. Meet up with your Mountain Tracks guide. Welcome meeting and trip briefing.

Day 2
Ascend using the Jungfrau Railway up the Jungfraujoch (3454m).
An astounding feat of Swiss engineering, the train climbs via a tunnel bored through the Eiger and the Mönch. We start with the descent down the Jungfraufirn before making an ascent of the Louwihorn (3773m). A 900m vertical descent leads us to Konkordiaplatz, where we use ladders to reach the Konkordia hut (2850m).

Day 3
We continue our journey eastwards over the Grunhornlucke (3280m). An ascent of the Wyssnollen (3590m), gives us magnificent views of the surrounding peaks and a great ski to the Finsteraarhorn hut (3048m).

Day 4
A big day with the ascent of the Gross Wannenhorn, (3905m). This is the most southerly of the peaks ascended. Return to the Finsteraarhorn hut for a second night.

Day 5
A traverse of the Trugberg (3880m). This peak is an island surrounded by glaciers. We ascend it via the Ewigschneefald ice fall to the east, and return to the Konkordia hut.

Day 6
The traverse the Kranzberg (3666m). This peak overlooks the Konkordiaplatz and is an excellent peak to take in on the way to the hut. Our descent to the Grosser Aletschfirn is spectacular and leads on to the Hollandia hut (3240m).

Day 7
This day is a great finish to the trip. We climb the Abeni Flue (3962m) Although not technical or steep it does give wonderful glacier skiing and, from the summit, brilliant views of the surrounding Swiss Valais. Descending back to the Hollandia hut and the Lotschenlucke gives access to the classic alpine ski run into the Lotschental. We return to Interlaken by train.

Day 8
Depart after breakfast.

We will make every endeavour to carry out the above itinerary but alterations may have to be made owing to weather and snow conditions.

Additional Information

Private group departures available on request from mid-March until end May.

What our clients say about the Bernese Oberland Ski Tour
"The hotel in Interlaken was well-positioned & comfortable. Huts were fine, as huts are.  Views from Konkordia are completely out of this world – like being with the gods - stunning! Guides were great, Matt in particular went out of his way to try to accommodate all the group’s needs. Bernese Oberland as a tour?  Unmissable!"
"I thought the whole trip went extremely well.  The guides where all friendly, professional, personable and altered each day to the ever changing ability of the group.  This resulted in a very enjoyable and fun tour. "
