Skill: **
The Gran Paradiso trek is an excellent introduction to high alpine trekking and so previous alpine mountaineering or high altitude trekking experience is not required. The route follows well defined trails between about 2200m and 3500m - going up to just over 4000m to the Gran Paradiso summit. In high summer the snowline is at about 2600m and so you'll carry and use crampons & ice axe and will be roped up for additional safety on the steeper sections.
Stamina: **
If you walk regularly in the UK and have a good level of fitness then you should have no problem undertaking the Gran Paradiso ascent. For alpine walking & climbing, aerobic fitness and leg strength are the key. So when preparing for this trip nothing beats activities that increase your heart rate and build your aerobic levels e.g. running, cycling and swimming. Movement skills - agility, balance, flexibility - which allow you to walk easily over rough ground to make your way safely up a snow slope - are also very relevant. If time permits try to include some yoga or pilates into your training schedule.
The Gran Paradiso is the highest peak entirely within Italy and at 4061m, it's the perfect peak to start your ‘4000er'
career and very achievable for hill-walkers looking for a new challenge.
It sits in the middle of the beautiful Gran Paradiso National Park and despite it's popularity with walkers there are no lifts
or tourist developments which enhances the feeling of remoteness that belies its accessibility.
If you are looking for an accessible alpine adventure, then this trip will definitely not disappoint!
Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Chamonix for the evening welcome meeting, guide's briefing and kit check. Stay overnight in the town.
Day 2
After breakfast we transfer through the Mt Blanc Tunnel to Val grisenche. From the roadhead at Usellieres we take a

Day 3
A gradual climb below the Grand Traversiere leads us to the Col Bessac Dere (3082m). from the col we make an ascent of
the Becca Traversiere (3334m) which gives great views of the journey ahead. We then descend to the Refuge Benevolo (2287m) via
the Golette Glacier. This hut is extremely friendly with a traditional Italian ambience and great views of the ibex grazing on
the local alpage.
Day 4
Ascending from the refuge to the Col Nivolettaz (3120m) takes 3 hours. From the Col we cross the rapidly receding Bassey
Glacier and scramble up the Punta Basei (3398m). We then re trace our steps to the Col and stay the night in the Refuge
Chivasso.

Descending from the hut past the lake de Nivolet we arrive in Pont where we stop for lunch and a shower. After this brief
interlude we continue with our quest up to the Vittorio Emanuele Refuge, the start point for our summit bid.
